Plywood gives you the strength of timber in a flat, stable sheet. The layers are laid at right angles to each other, so a board resists bending and splitting far better than solid wood of the same thickness, and it holds screws and nails right up to the edge. In packaging it becomes crate walls, lids, dividers, pallet decks and protective covers, and it can be cut and drilled on site with ordinary tools.
