The wooden pallet is still the backbone of the supply chain because it is strong, cheap and easy to repair. Timber takes concentrated point loads well, which is why heavy drums, sacks and machinery sit on wood rather than anything lighter. The deck boards give strap and stretch film something to bite on, and a damaged board can be replaced in minutes instead of scrapping the pallet. For export, heat treated pallets meet ISPM 15 requirements.
